The first upgraded weather station will be on the A56 near Accrington as National Highways undergoes a modernisation
Accrington will be the first area of the UK to benefit from an upgraded weather station to enable road bosses to make better decisions about deploying gritters.
Many of the existing weather stations are up to 25 years old and do not have the latest, modern technology. The update will provide the stations with more accurate data to improve year-round management of major roads, the PA News Agency reports. This includes sensors assessing conditions in the atmosphere and on carriageways using cables running between the stations and the roads.
“The data from the road weather stations goes to National Highways. Their winter maintenance decision makers use that to determine whether or not they need to send a plough truck out or a vehicle to put down salt on the road. “But the beauty of the sensors is that they also provide value to National Highways during the summertime as well.Gritters work for icy conditions, spreading rock salt on roads which combines with moisture to prevent ice from forming when temperatures drop below zero. It is important they are deployed before the snow falls as they do not directly melt it.
