Lancashire and Cumbria hospitals paid almost £3k for agency doctor to cover a single shift
NHS hospitals in Lancashire and Cumbria forked out more than £2,000 for a temporary agency sector doctor to cover a single shift as the staffing crisis gets worse.
In Lancashire, £2,604 was spent by East Lancashire Hospital NHS Trust and £2,717 was spent by North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. Labour's Wes Streeting, who uncovered the figures, called on ministers to increase the number of medical school places so the country can train enough doctors, reports the Mirror.
Over the last four years, NHS bosses have been forced to pay nearly £3.7 billion to hire private agency doctors. That works out at almost £1billion a year - enough to pay the salaries of more than 30,000 new junior doctors.
