The bi-directional cameras caught more than 3,000 speeding motorists in a few days
New high-tech speed cameras could be rolled out across the country. The two-way cameras can detect speeding motorists in both directions and have already caught thousands of drivers in Devon and Cornwall.
The pilot project saw four of the stat-of-the-art cameras installed and 3,280 drivers were issued speeding tickets in a 14-day period, reports DevonLive.A single camera was activated up to 120 times per day in the first two weeks, while another detected a driver travelling at 73mph on a 30mph road. A single camera will face each direction to cover both lanes of the road. The speed cameras also do not reauire painted white chevrons on the road, like many of the older legacy cameras do. Also equipped on the bi-directional cameras is infrared, low light technology, meaning there will no longer be a flash at speeding drivers. Additionally, the new cameras do not look like the typical yellow box cameras that drivers are used to seeing.
It is thought the bi-directional cameras will help deter drivers from speeding even more effectively than the current models. Gary Digva, founder of Road Angel hopes this will further encourage drivers to stay mindful of their speed and the danger it poses to themselves and all other road users.
