'Suddenly it became that substance that I can't hack and that I can't live without, because if I didn't have the alcohol, I would have the withdrawals, come the seizures and then come death.'
A former teacher who saw her battle with alcohol go from a glass of wine to four bottles a night, is speaking out about the dangers of being grappled by addiction.
During the pandemic, Helen was working at Calico - Burnley Together, where she worked on the phonelines from home in helping the community through foodbanks and social prescribing. Before then, Helen was a primary school teacher and when she came home from a day of work, she would regularly enjoy a glass of wine with her evening meal as her "comedown" from a busy day.
Reaching out to Inspire Lancashire, Helen went into residential detox for 10 days, but things turned serious while she was in there. Helen suffered a seizure, but still managed to complete her 10 days. After coming out, she was sober for 10 months. Helen spent six weeks in hospital afterwards and she suffered a hemiplegic migraine, which paralysed her down the left-hand side, caused by stress and anxiety. The mum says that she also has "lifelong disabilities" as a result of drinking alcohol and that if she could "chop her feet off and give them to somebody else for half a day" then they would never drink again due to the agony.
