A new statue, 'Standing in this Place', will be unveiled in Nottingham, depicting an enslaved black woman and a white woman working in textile mills. The sculpture, created by Rachel Carter and Legacy Makers, aims to represent the underrepresented women who drove the East Midlands' cotton textile industry during Industrialization.

A new "ambitious" landmark will soon be unveiled at the Green Heart open space on the site of the former Broadmarsh shopping centre in Nottingham. A statue, created by sculptor Rachel Carter and the Legacy Makers, a community history group, will be formally unveiled on Thursday, February 6.

The project, called Standing in this Place, was commissioned by the National Justice Museum and depicts two women in period costume. These are an enslaved black woman working in the American cotton fields and a white woman working in the East Midlands’ textile mills. The sculpture has been described as "ambitious" by its creators, giving "representation to the under-represented, voice and recognition to the contributions of thousands of unnamed women who were the driving forces behind the East Midlands' cotton textile industry during Industrialisation".

A statement on a website dedicated to the sculpture reads: "The statue’s inclusion in a public park places Nottingham at the forefront of historic female recognition and makes Nottingham a regional, national and global leader in acknowledging the significant contribution women have made to the British economy and society in their roles as enslaved workers in the Americas and Caribbean and as factory workers in industrial Britain.

Following the installation of the life-sized bronze statue, the National Justice Museum will become the custodians of the sculpture, preserving it over the years. The preservation and maintenance will be jointly managed by Nottingham City Council and the National Justice Museum.
