The European holiday hotspot has issued the rare warning for British holidaymakers
The holiday destination of Lanzarote has sounded a "black alert" for UK tourists visiting one of its most popular beaches. Playa Blanca, famed for its clear blue waters and golden sands amidst a busy tourist scene, has been issued a concerning black flag by the environmental group Ecologistas en Accion due to serious environmental issues.
The coveted beach spot located near Papagayo has landed on an undesirable list in Ecologistas en Accion's annual report, which has been casting a light on poor environmental practices across Spain since 2005. The damning report singles out 48 Spanish beaches for this negative distinction, with Playa Blanca's inclusion notably attributed to "sewage discharges".
Following sewage-related closures that commenced on May 4, necessitating repairs and resulting in a red flag halting beach access temporarily during cleaning efforts, the Playa Blanca beach is currently under scrutiny. Ecologistas en Accion has emphasized the urgency to resolve problems like the mishandling of wet wipes and diapers, along with a dire need to upgrade sewage treatment facilities and bolster monitoring of wastewater systems to protect coastal regions from further damage.
Out of the 48 beaches mentioned, 15 are reportedly suffering from overdevelopment near the shoreline, while 16 have been flagged for inadequate wastewater management, leading to ineffective removal of pollutants and contaminants from the sea, reports Birmingham Live. The report also cites chemical pollution, noise pollution, industrial damage, and marine waste as reasons for some beaches being included. The ecologists further allege that two hotels in Fuerteventura have been constructed within a protected area. Lanzarote is a popular destination for British tourists, along with other Canary Islands hotspots such as Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
