A significant fire engulfed a cluster of commercial properties on Hayes Lane in Lye, Stourbridge, on Saturday evening. Ten fire crews responded to the incident, battling the flames throughout the night. Four crews remained on Sunday to monitor for any remaining hotspots. West Midlands Fire Service is investigating the cause of the blaze, which impacted several businesses. One business owner, Ajmal Waheed, described the situation as 'panic,' while nearby residents expressed shock and concern.

The fire, reported to the control room around 5:45 PM GMT, resulted in an interrupted power supply and audible explosions. Thankfully, there were no reported casualties or injuries. Ray and Tracy Cox, local residents, witnessed the unfolding event and shared their community's shock and sadness for the affected business owners. Mrs. Cox, alerted by her son who spotted the flames from their window, described seeing 'flames roaring' from a fishing tackle shop. She commended the swift response of the fire service, noting the arrival of 'fire engine after fire engine.'Steve Barrett, a long-time resident of the road, described the fire as 'really bad' and confirmed the impact on several businesses, including a fishing tackle shop. He expressed his sympathy for the store owner, stating that everything had been destroyed. Fire station commander Darryll Darkin acknowledged the 'big challenge' of maintaining power supplies for the community while ensuring the safety of the area. He mentioned ongoing electrical challenges due to building collapses affecting the local substation. West Midlands Police established road closures, which were gradually lifted, but advised that intermittent closures might be necessary throughout Sunday to facilitate safe work conditions for crews. The fire service urged nearby residents to keep doors and windows closed as a precautionary measure and advised the public to avoid the area if possible
