John Drinkwater 'was larger than life and very generous of his time and helping other people'
Heartfelt tributes have been made to a local legend who was devoted to helping his community and providing opportunities for children in grassroots football.
Over the last three decades, John and his late wife of more than 50 years, Jean played an active role in the community. Globe Bullough Park FC, which first began at the Spinning Jenny in Accrington and then moved to Bullough Park in Accrington, now boasts hundreds of players, from youngsters to adults.
He was awarded with an MBE for his work involving restoring the lodges and turning it into a nature reserve for the use of local residents and schools. He was very proud of the award and attributed it to many others who also gave their time. Last year he received the Queen’s Jubilee award for community work.
He first met Jean in 1967 when Jean was babysitting for John’s cousin and married a year later at Haslingden Registrars. They had three children; the late Adrienne, Jason and Christopher. “He was very well respected and he did things for the betterment of the area. He was very passionate and had a heart of gold. He helped with many open days and festivals at Bullough Park.
John was a dedicated community champion who will be sadly missed by many residents across Fern Gore and Spring Hill.Globe Bullough Park FC posted a tribute on their Facebook page which reads: “ As we are all about to start another season our founder member and club honorary president sadly has passed away.
