Known correctly for getting Petco Park, Larry Lucchino also retained Bruce Bochy, promoted and mentored Kevin Towers and hired Theo Epstein
Larry Lucchino, who died Tuesday at age 78, changed not only the landscape of downtown San Diego but the fortunes of the city's two major sports franchises when he got Petco Park built through seven years of intense, smart effort. Lucchino's stewardship of the Padres' baseball side is overlooked because his first mission was to get the ballpark subsidy.
Aside from securing $300 million in public money toward the $456-million ballpark, the energetic Lucchino provided effective — if volatile — stewardship before Moores fired him in 2001. Lucchino retained and doubled down on Bruce Bochy, the rookie manager he inherited. He promoted into the general manager’s job Kevin Towers, the Padres' scouting director who’d served as Bochy’s first pitching coach in the minor leagues.
