Nothing was working. The Padres were coming up empty, running recklessly. Again. And then things began falling into place, beginning with Jake Cronenworth’s bloop double that drove in one run and led to the game-tying run in a three-run fifth inning. Then things fell apart again. The Padres returned home Thursday and continued reeling. A 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks was the Padres’ fifth straight defeat, tying their season-high skid and dropping them to two games below .
They had scored five runs while being swept by the Angels over the previous three days. Through four innings Thursday, they were scoreless and for the third time in four games had a player make a decision on the basepaths that resulted in an out. This time it was Tatis, who followed his one-out double in the third inning by getting picked off second base.
