Des Gibbons disagrees with Keir Starmer's stance on the conflict between Israel and Palestine
A third Nottinghamshire Labour councillor has resigned over the party's stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Des Gibbons, Gedling Borough councillor for the Bestwood St Albans ward, stepped down on Monday after Labour party leader Keir Starmer refused to call for a ceasefire in Gaza amid the ongoing war in Gaza.
He said: "I was incredibly disappointed that Keir Starmer continued to resist calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, particularly while innocent men, women and children continue to die and suffer as a result of Israeli airstrikes and bombardment. The attacks on Israel in October were horrific but the ongoing collective punishment of citizens in Gaza is completely disproportionate."This is the second time Mr Gibbons has resigned from the Labour party.
Mr Gibbons was re-elected as councillor for Bestwood St Alban's in May for his second term. He says his constituents will not be affected by his resignation. Mr Gibbons is the third Labour councillor in Nottinghamshire to resign from his post in recent weeks after Gedling Borough's Russell Whiting, councillor for Colwick, and Nottingham City Councillor Nadia Farhat, councillor for Leen Valley.
