Brigette Browning used slang terms to describe County Supervisor Chair Nora Vargas

SAN DIEGO — Latino leaders are calling for the resignation of the head of the San Diego Labor Council, following what they call racist remarks at a public rally two weeks ago.

Several groups called for Browning’s resignation during a news conference Tuesday at the San Diego County Administration Building.at the same location, criticizing county supervisor board chair Nora Vargas, over her decision not to interview San Jose labor leader, Cindy Chavez, as a candidate for the county’s chief administrative officer position.

During her April speech, Browning used a Spanish slang phrase, meaning"bad ass" to call out Vargas. “I want talk about our chair, the chingona, who says she's here for workers. But she's making backroom deals with Desmond and Anderson,” Browning said during the rally, according toBrowning then started to chant, using another Spanish phrase that some Latino leaders described as racist and demeaning.

I want to be very clear about this, too — I will not stand by quietly while powerful people try to silence workers' voices. County workers have a tremendous amount at stake in the choice of a new CAO, as do all residents of San Diego County. The status-quo has mistreated and ignored essential county workers for decades.
