Niki Lauda’s wife Birgit, 30 years his junior, saved his life by donating her kidney before they married in seven minute ceremony21st May 2019,Birgit, who was 30 years his junior, donated her kidney to Lauda just eight months after the loved-up pair started dating.

It was through his airline business that he met Birgit who worked as a flight attendant for his company at the time. Lauda asked his son Lucas from his first marriage to Marele Knaus if he would test his kidney but it did not fit.In 2008, he told a reporter: "I asked my son Lucas if he would test to donate a kidney, but it did not fit.

"I said 'you will never ever donate your kidney because I’m ill and I’ve known you for eight [months]'.
