A young law student who was arrested four years ago following allegations of recklessly causing injury – is the latest set to enter a race within the Liberal Party to fill a forthcoming vacant seat in the Parliament of Victoria.

Sky News Australia can reveal 26-year-old Melbourne University student Chris Kounelis will nominate for pre-selection in the Liberal Party for North Eastern Metropolitan Region, when sitting member Matthew Bach leaves the Parliament later this year.

Mr Kournelis is a former staffer to Speaker of the House of Representatives Tony Smith and State MP for Evelyn Bridget Vallance. Police said officers investigated the report of an unlawful assault that took place in Parkville on 7 August 2019. Speaking about his intention to become an MP in the Victorian Parliament, Mr Kounelis said he believed his membership and role as secretary of the federal electorate conference in Menzies would place him in good standing to run as an MP in Victoria.

It follows a pre-selection contest in June for the lower house seat of Warrandyte which saw former pastor Nicole Werner beat six other candidates for the Liberal nomination.
