State lawmakers are startled by Alabama’s low labor participation rate and now want to make it easier for new parents to get a job.

The Child Care Tax Credit Bill would invest $25 Million dollars in incentivizing Alabama businesses to offer quality childcare. MONTGOMERY , Ala. - “I mean, if you’re taking about two kids and it’s $24,000 and you gotta pay for utilities and gas and overhead for your family, for a single mom, it’s almost impossible,” said House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter .

The childcare tax credit bill is a part of the “Working for Alabama” bill package. It would invest $25 million this year in incentivizing organizations to offer quality childcare. Employers, childcare providers, and nonprofits would all apply. The bill is expected to help more than 7,000 families in the first year and 24,000 families in three years. Automotive experts say this would help get women into the manufacturing industry.

“Women are the manufacturing industries largest talent opportunity,” said Karen Johnston, Toyota North America Regional Director of Governmental Affairs. “Unfortunately, the main barrier for women to enter or re-enter the workforce is lack of childcare.” Advocates say parents in Alabama make up 35% of the workforce, something lawmakers hope this bill will improve. Not reading this story on the WSFA News App?
