Aamer Anwar, representing Sheku Bayoh's family, urges the deputy first minister, Kate Forbes, to extend the inquiry terms to include the Crown's decision-making process during prosecution, arguing the current inquiry is insufficient.
Kate Forbes has been urged to extend the terms of reference of an inquiry into the death of Sheku Bayoh , who died in police custody nine years ago. Aamer Anwar , who represents Bayoh's family, argues that this is necessary for the inquiry to fulfill its purpose. Sheku, a father of two, was brutally restrained by six officers in Kirkcaldy in 2015, leading to his death. CS gas, pepper spray, batons, and restraints were used during the arrest.
Following an investigation, the Crown Office decided not to take legal action against the involved officers. The public inquiry, before Lord Bracadale, is currently examining whether race played a role in the police's actions. Anwar claims that both the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (Pirc) and the Crown Office failed in their roles after Bayoh's death. He requests that the inquiry be extended to examine the Crown's decision-making process during the prosecution. The family has been campaigning for truth and justice for over nine years and believes the inquiry cannot fulfill its purpose without this extension
