Mong is retiring from the University of Texas at Dallas after nearly a decade at the helm.I announced on my 75th birthday recently that I would soon step down from the presidency of the University of North Texas at Dallas and its College of Law after nine years.
To succeed, I had to open myself up to a community of students and residents I would not otherwise have encountered. Lucky me. Their voices, which now number in the thousands, stirred my life with purpose and passion to make a difference. I learned to listen in new and novel ways that filled my head with ideas and initiatives to make UNT Dallas an authentic and genuinely impactful part of the community.Southern Dallas casts a huge geographic footprint in the city.
Given our strategic location on the DART Blue Line and near interstate highways, UNT Dallas will likely be the locus for much needed high-quality development in our area. The school already is one of the largest employers in southern Dallas. We also routinely work with all the potential catalysts for growth — city of Dallas economic development, the Dallas ISD, Dallas College and the Dallas Regional Chamber, to name just a few of our close partners.
On May 4, voters will decide on a bond election that has consequences for street repairs, parks, needed infrastructure projects and more. Included in this important mix of choices is a $50 million item to build. The current Dallas Police Academy training center is cramped and dated. I’m pleased that UNT Dallas has played an important role the last few years in raising awareness of the current academy’s limitations.
