Is Leanne Battersby's time on Coronation Street at an end? This article explores the character's legacy, recent storylines, and the need for a change.
Leanne Battersby has become a Coronation Street legend thanks to her near 30 years on the cobbles. During that time, she's held numerous jobs, from prostitute to restaurant manager to lap dancer to drug dealer, and has been involved in countless dramas.
She's seen bosses come and go, some even losing viewers along the way, but Leanne has consistently delivered over the years, keeping fans engrossed with a vast range of storylines, from abortion and miscarriage to drug abuse and a brief stint as a prostitute. She's a multi-faceted character, with recent storylines including the death of her child, fraud, and being brainwashed by a cult, exposing Leanne's vulnerable side. Arguably one of her most important storylines, if not the most, is the death of her son Oliver from mitochondrial disease. Jane Danson, the actress who portrays Leanne, delivered a powerful performance as she watched her son deteriorate rapidly from a healthy young boy to his horrific death, striking an emotional chord with viewers as every parent's worst nightmare played out on screen. Danson's ability to bring such rawness and grit to these storylines is truly commendable. However, in recent years, the character has become stale. This isn't a criticism of Danson's acting, but rather a reflection of the writers' reluctance to bring Leanne's story to a natural conclusion. When she's not embroiled in some drama at the Viaduct Bistro or screaming match with her on-screen sister Toyah and estranged husband Nick, Leanne is easily forgotten. With her son Oliver and step-son Simon Barlow no longer in the picture, there's little anchoring her to the cobbles. Recent scenes of her and Toyah having a heart-to-heart after Leanne tried to frame her for fraud felt boring and forced. Social media is filled with die-hard fans begging soap bosses for lighter, more upbeat storylines. They're desperate for the show to return to its golden age. While upsetting and dark storylines are sometimes necessary to mirror society, there's been an overabundance in recent years. Leanne needs a break. She doesn't have to be killed off, just like her father didn't deserve to be. Executive producer Kate Brooks has an opportunity to rest the character, and the writers have several avenues for Leanne's departure. The obvious choice is to send her down for fraud, but bosses could also let her become engrossed in a cult once again, running away from Weatherfield for an extended period. This keeps the door open for her eventual return, but perhaps in a few years. While some might feel that playing a long-running soap icon 'ruins' their career, this isn't the case for the brilliant Jane Danson. Leanne has proven to be a truly multi-faceted character, even more so in recent weeks. Danson excelled in portraying Leanne's discovery that Nick and Toyah were still sleeping together. Her transition from meek and mild to her classic soap 'bitch' ways injected some much-needed fire into the often dreary cobbles. Fans of the show have been forced to pick a side, and Leanne's teenage feistiness has been clear to see as she continues to make life a living hell for her sister and ex. Rather than resorting to violent rampages and verbal rage, Leanne pulls off her stunts with a smile and a twinkle in her eye. The decision to team her up with Tracy Barlow has provided a double act that is simply delightful. While Tracy is arguably the more evil of the two, watching her coach Leanne on how to truly annoy Toyah has been a delight. Just this week, watching Tracy and Leanne mercilessly mock Toyah in the Bistro was hilarious and brought Corrie back to its roots. Like the tearaway teens and the grating Lauren Bolton of the past, Leanne's cunning ways have injected some much-needed real-life humor and Northern comedy back into the ITV soap. She is one of the few Weatherfield residents left who are pure Coronation Street through and through
