📺 Jane Austen is funny – and filmmakers have been doing her dirty by playing it too straight
From the noughties spawned a whole genre unpacking the trope of the period-drama fanatic,, all poking gentle fun at the wet shirts and throat-clutching people had come to expect from the Austen adaptation.
But why are we so eager to keep out those wry little asides, when it is the little winks at the reader that makes Austen so brilliant? A filmmaker has less dialogue to go on with. Austen’s final novel is distinctly more subjective and inward-looking and at times structurally dissonant than her earlier work.
