As bombs fall only streets away from Beirut's airport, Middle East Airlines has become a symbol of national pride and resilience
“Badass Middle East Airlines continue landing despite heavy Israeli bombardment around the airport,” wrote Maha Yahya, director of the Carnegie Middle East Center, last week. “Every 30 seconds, minute, two minutes, you’d hear an explosion or a couple together. But it was muffled, it was like in the distance. We knew it was only a few kilometres away at most.”
“It’s not in the interest of Israel to shoot down an airliner. And who is in control of the airspace basically, that’s Israel… If they are in touch, can put that in their risk assessments.” But Captain Aziz is keen to stress that the airline does not take off and land while airstrikes are taking place.
