Dan Cohen, a Conservative councillor representing Alwoodley, has been announced as the next Lord Mayor of Leeds . His appointment was confirmed at a Leeds City Council meeting on Wednesday, January 15th, and he will assume his duties in May for a period of 12 months. Cohen expressed his profound honor and humility in being chosen as the 131st Lord Mayor , emphasizing that representing his hometown in this capacity is incredibly meaningful.

He jokingly added that the only thing missing for a perfect year would be Leeds United's promotion to the Premier League. Cohen highlighted the city's vibrant, diverse, and dynamic nature, stating that serving its residents alongside his wife, Elayna Cohen, who will be the Lady Mayoress, is a privilege.Born and raised in Alwoodley, Cohen has been the city councillor for his ward since 2011. His educational journey included attending Deborah Taylor Nursery, Richmond House School, and Leeds Grammar School before pursuing law at Northumbria University, graduating in 1992. Following his studies, he completed a training contract with a prominent Leeds law firm. By profession, Cohen is a solicitor. He spent the majority of his career as the Managing Director and head of in-house legal at Madison Hosiery, a leading Leeds SME specializing in importing and distributing hosiery to major retailers across the country. The family business was founded by his father, Henry Cohen, in the 1960s.On the Leeds City Council, Cohen currently chairs the Children and Families Scrutiny Board. Beyond his council responsibilities, he holds several prominent positions. He serves as Head of In House Legal at The Cohen Foundation, Chair of Governors at Leeds Jewish Free School (a school he helped establish in 2013), and a governor at Brodetsky Primary School, Highfield Primary School, and Allerton High School. The current Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, will continue her Mayoral Year until the Leeds City Council's AGM on May 22nd
