Mark James claimed he had changed his name so could not be the person the court needed to sentence for breaching notification requirements
A convicted paedophile who claims to have changed his name to "escape the negativity" of his previous offending told a judge he would be committing perjury if he admitted to failing to comply with notification requirements.
"On 3rd March 2021, police went to his house and arrested and searched him and found and seized a Barclays bank card and a credit card. In his interview he denied being on the [Sex Offenders'] register and denied being Mark James and said he was called Christian. He pleaded not guilty for failing to comply with notification requirements and was sent for trial. He was required to reaffirm his details.
James told the court he was born as Mark Shields but his name was changed to James when he was adopted. The judge told him he had previously pleaded guilty with that name, was on the register with that name and had taken out the bank and credit cards in that name. Judge Batty said: "I'm satisfied you're the person we should be dealing with and you pleaded guilty to this offence of your own free will.
