Exclusive: Rohan Smith has identified an answer to his halfback problem.
Leeds Rhinos have identified their overseas halfback target after launching a move for Canberra Raiders halfback Matt Frawley. Rugby League Live can reveal Rohan Smith has identified the playmaker as a key recruitment option as part of his 2024 squad building and talks have taken place regarding a move to Headingley.
There is hope within the club that a deal will be completed for Frawley who, after the arrival of Lachie Miller last week, has been made the club's priority as they look to complete a deal to secure a new halfback for next season. The contracts of Aidan Sezer and Blake Austin expire at the end of the season and the Rhinos intend to use a quota spot on recruiting an overseas halfback.
And it appears that player could well be Frawley, who has previous experience of playing in Super League. He played for Huddersfield Giants in 2019, making 22 appearances in the process, but departed after just one season. Before that, he had made his NRL breakthrough with Canterbury Bulldogs and after his stint with the Giants, he headed to Canberra.
He has made 50 NRL appearances, scoring nine tries, with five of those outings coming this season. He has played ten games in the New South Wales Cup this year, scoring five tries and six assists in the process.Frawley is off-contract at the end of the season leaving Leeds in a position to hold talks with a player who fits the bill for what Smith wants in a halfback. He provides a running threat, a key component Smith wants in a spine player.
If Leeds could secure a deal, it would be a significant piece in next year's jigsaw. Capturing Frawley would provide them with a new halfback option to go alongside Miller, who will be deployed as a fullback following his move from Newcastle Knights.
