Hyperbole is easy when you are describing a 17-year-old footballer who is already a mainstay at a second-tier club having graduated from their own academy and a family dynasty stretching back decades. Archie Gray will write his own story and, at this point, it seems he will be whatever he wants to be.
At every opportunity, the teenager has shown he is more than ready for this step up, to the extent his inclusion in Daniel Farke’s starting line-ups barely raises a flicker of shock anymore. He belongs.And yet, as his recent England withdrawal shows, his match time needs to be managed. There needs to be caution with the youngster at the risk of burning him out before he hits his mid-20s.
Bellingham’s own bloodline might just explain his own accelerated pathway, but the point is Gray is bucking a trend. His talent is immense and it’s not common for someone so young to play this much.
