Liam Cooper is yet to sign a contract with a new club after being released by Leeds United this summer as the Whites wait to recognise his long service
Former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper continues to look for a new club after the expiry of his Whites deal in June. Blackburn Rovers had made the most progress in contract talks with the Scotland international, but an agreement could not be reached and they pursued other targets.
The collapse of those talks leaves Cooper assessing his options with the new Championship campaign eight days away. The 32-year-old will be hopeful his 273 appearances in England’s top two divisions, and title-winning experience, can still attract an offer that makes the most sense for him and his young family.
Moving abroad remains an option for Cooper, but the deal would need to be very attractive to either take his family away from the UK or leave them behind. As August unfolds and the new season gets underway, the transfer market will move faster, players will pick up injuries and managers’ needs will change, possibly opening the door for Cooper.
The former Hull City trainee made 284 appearances for Leeds, more than the likes of Nigel Martyn, Mervyn Day and John Sheridan, across 10 seasons after arriving in August 2014.
