It stung again last night
Here are our five talking points from Leeds United's 1-0 loss to Millwall at The Den in the Championship as the hosts scored from a set-piece and then defended stoically on a night the visitors failed to ever get going. This was another night left waiting for inspiration.
Nobody would disagree the correct set of players started the game. Nor would they suggest Manor Solomon and Mateo Joseph have been finding more answers on the pitch than their starting colleagues in recent weeks. That speaks not only to his quality and threat, but also to the distinct lack of quality and all-round potency from open play in both sides. Wilfried Gnonto and Brenden Aaronson had eight and six touches in the home box respectively, then Cooper was next in the match on five.
Those ratios are not going to cut the mustard. In their defence, it is also worth noting how well Ao Tanaka and Junior Firpo fared in stark contrast. The latter won 11 of his 15 battles, and the former came away with the ball on nine out of 12 occasions he went head-to-head with an opponent. It’s not a season-ending problem because, as the league table shows, Leeds are evidently doing well overall, but on a night like this, you were left feeling Leeds lacked vision, creativity and flair in the final third. An ability to do something different, or to create something out of nothing.
