Leeds United manager Daniel Farke expressed his high regard for goalkeeper Alex Cairns, highlighting his positive impact on the team despite limited playing time.
Love is a powerful emotion. It’s not a word bandied around lightly in a Daniel Farke press conference. So when the Leeds United manager drops three L bombs in two-and-a-half minutes, you know he means it. Alex Cairns has not played a minute for the Whites since ending his nine-year exile, but Farke would stack up the goalkeeper’s impact alongside a Pascal Struijk or a Joe Rodon all the same.
Game time is what the public sees, but any promotion-winning squad is built on foundations forged across thousands of hours at the training ground, on the coach and in the dressing room. The 31-year-old is the squad glue we first heard rumblings about in Germany, when Daniel James and Karl Darlow were among those singing his praises. Cairns may seem like a mile away from pitch time, but Farke loves him and his quest to keep the pressure on those in front of him. “I love him,” he said. “First of all, it's good because we don't have to play against him in the cup competitions anymore. He was outstanding against us and I don't want to be reminded about this game (at Salford City in the EFL Cup last season) because he was great in his performance and also what he did against our penalties. “Yes, overall, I actually love him because he came in knowing exactly about this role. He knew we've got Illan , we've got Karl, top goalkeepers for this level, but he chipped in and tries to prove in each and every training session he's the best one we have. “I want these players to know their role, but also not to rest. It's more like he wants to improve each and every day.
