Leeds United's players were inconsolable after their Championship play-off final loss to Southampton and left Wembley with a clear message from manager Daniel Farke

Trust, backing and a reminder of their immense success for so much of last season. That was the core of the message Daniel Farke tried to give Leeds United’s players as they parted ways at Wembley last month.

Farke said it was not the time for long messages, especially analysis of where they went wrong in the 1-0 defeat. The German, who would have preferred to be suffering on his own in a quiet corner somewhere, tried to remind his beaten charges just how far they have come since meeting last July. “No genius messages because they were too down, everyone wants to suffer alone, but also there were many, many tears on the pitch and many players really suffering,” said Farke. “In this moment, just a hug helps and perhaps one or two warm words, especially to several of them, who were disappointed they didn't use a chance or were perhaps also involved in the first goal, when we opened a bit the centre, to give the message they still can be proud after such a terrific season.

“In such a moment, it’s not like to analyse ‘Okay, how we could have been a bit tighter in the backline when Armstrong scored,’” he said. “It's more like, yes, to back them and to give them the trust and to tell them how great they were during the season, that they can be really proud of them.”
