The author predicts three changes to the Leeds United starting lineup for their upcoming match against Oxford United.
Three changes would be made to the Leeds United team if I were in charge on Saturday afternoon. As Oxford United visit Elland Road, the hosts are even more overwhelming favourites than usual. At the time of writing, the visitors were yet to appoint Des Buckingham’s permanent successor, though Gary Rowett has been the favourite for several days. Either way, this is a newly promoted team with its collective confidence shot to pieces as they play one of the toughest away games of the season.
Leeds did not lose last weekend at Deepdale, but need a response to two more points dropped on the road. The major injury question mark left hanging over the dressing room lies with Pascal Struijk. The vice-captain was rated as 50-50 in Thursday’s press conference. It seems unwise to risk aggravating any pain in the vice-captain, especially when Ethan Ampadu is ready to return to the fray. The captain has had two run-outs from the bench and seems well set for a start, given it would be in the relatively untaxing role of centre-back against an opponent they expect to pin back and dominate. We know how solid Ampadu and Joe Rodon can be as a partnership too. There is also the weekly push for Wilfried Gnonto to start behind the team’s striker. Brenden Aaronson frustrated again last week and his rash miss in the first half only added insult to injury. Gnonto’s shift inside would allow Largie Ramazani’s first start since October 22. The Belgian has been back on the bench for a few weeks now and is well overdue a turn on the flanks. This week’s Hokey Cokey with Mateo Joseph and Joel Piroe continues. The latter was anonymous from the start at Deepdale, while the former played a key role in the own goal equaliser. Neither has wholly convinced in recent weeks, but it’s the youth’s turn. Beren’s XI: Meslier; Bogle, Rodon, Ampadu, Byram; Tanaka, Rothwell; James, Gnonto, Ramazani; Josep
