Birmingham City have quickly moved to replace John Eustace with former England skipper Wayne Rooney
Leeds United's Championship rivals Birmingham City have confirmed the appointment of Wayne Rooney as their new manager. The former England record goalscorer replaces John Eustace in the St Andrew's dugout after he was sacked on Monday, despite the Blues sitting sixth in the Championship table.
Rooney has signed a three-and-a-half year deal with the club and joins after he left MLS side DC United earlier this month after his side failed to make the play-offs. The hire sees Rooney return to the Midlands after he kicked off his managerial career with a spell at Derby County between 2020 and 2022.
The 37-year-old is Blues' new American owners Shelby Companies Limited's first managerial hire since they bought the club in the summer, amid criticism in some parts over their firing of Eustace who had the team sitting in the play-off spots after 11 games."Wayne is a born winner," co-owner and chairman Tom Wagner said as the club announced the move.
"His playing philosophy will help to realise the ambitions we have set for Birmingham City. Wayne has been preparing for an opportunity like this since he embarked on his coaching education whilst still a player at Manchester United.Joining Rooney as part of his coaching staff will be former Arsenal, Chelsea and England defender Ashley Cole and ex-Manchester United man John O'Shea, while former Leeds goalkeeper Maik Taylor will remain at the club as goalkeeper coach.
Birmingham handed Leeds their first defeat of the Championship season when the two sides met in August, but Leeds fans will no doubt be ready to give the former Manchester United man a lively reception when he brings his side to Elland Road for a clash which is currently scheduled for New Year's Day.
