Paraag Marathe spoke to the media for the first time as Leeds United chairman within 48 hours of a devastating Championship play-off final loss and addressed transfer debt, Archie Gray and profit and sustainability
A credit card bill awaited 49ers Enterprises in Leeds United’s boardroom post-takeover, but the debts are accounted for and Paraag Marathe wants to live at the limits of P&S. In his first series of interviews since becoming chairman at Elland Road, the chairman also backed Daniel Farke , gave no guarantees on Archie Gray ’s future and indicated returning loanees will not upset the apple cart.
The club accounts, for example, indicate there is in the region of £190m outstanding in outgoing transfer payments. The accounts don’t, according to Marathe, reflect the cash injections provided by Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra’s sales. “Our two January sales in Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra, there's some inbound transfer payments coming from that. The net is already a little bit lower than what was reported, but, again, we have what we need to be competitive.
“Honestly, my hope is we're always going to be dealing with some P&S complications because we are always going to be fielding a team as legally competitive as we can,” he said. “So, whether in the Championship or the Premier League, we are going to be going full tilt to make us as competitive as we can be.
After a first full year of senior football as a regular under Farke, supporters will rightly hope he continues that development with his family and an adoring public on his doorstep. Marathe, mindful of the transience of professional sport, did not want to guarantee the teenager will be here on August 31.
