The 2026 summer transfer window opens today, though don’t expect a raft of activity in the first few weeks. The World Cup is set to truncate business until the latter phase of the window - albeit that is not to say no business will be done.

Facundo Buonanotte’s loan was an abject failure but he is that type of player profile Leeds will be after. Harry Wilson had signed terms on deadline day last summer before Fulham pulled the plug in the final moments.
He is someone who could feasibly adopt such a role, albeit is more of an attacker-cum-10 rather than vice versa. The Welshman is a free agent after 10 goals and seven assists in the Premier League last season but Leeds will have heavy competition for his signature. And that could be one undertone of the summer given Leeds will be going for higher-quality individual players. Longer battles may be endured to capture the stardust desired, possibly via bidding wars.
Fewer signings are expected than the 10 of last summer with the goal this time to raise the ceiling, rather than the floor, of the squad. Leeds do meanwhile need to plug gaps. A left-footed back-up left-back was on the agenda in January and will be this summer too. James Justin has been ample cover when Gabriel Gudmundsson has been sidelined but Leeds need a natural secondary option there if they are to progress.
Recruitment chiefs will have an eye on centre-back too, especially if the back three system is retained. While the ever-versatile Justin became a surprise fifth option as a wide centre-back, Leeds lacked natural cover. This position will shoot higher up in the priority list if Sebastiaan Bornauw is tempted away or if the club needs to make a call on Pascal Struijk.
The Dutch defender is about to enter the final year of his contract and it is anticipated Leeds may look to tie him down to longer. The 26-year-old was the subject of an approach last summer and is expected to have interest this window too after a season of growth.
If Leeds cannot agree a renewal they may wish to cash in on a player they have spent eight years building up rather than risk him leaving for free in 2027. Leeds are in a similar position with other players too. Ilia Gruev and Brenden Aaronson are also set to enter into the final 12 months of their deals and Leeds might have to make a contract or sale choice, if unwilling to sit on their hands in either case.
This could impact how they view their central midfield transfer mindset, as would an offer for Ao Tanaka,. For now, it is possible United stick with the status quo in that area, having tied captain Ethan Ampadu down to four more years. That is arguably the best piece of summer business already and may tempt others to sign on too given the skipper, the leader of the pack, clearly buys into the project.
A call over Lukas Nmecha, who also has a year left, is easier given his free agent status while Joel Piroe is expected to leave for cash. He will not be the only senior player to exit this summer, with chairman Paraag Marathe underlining the point that there will be sales as well as arrivals. This is in part due to the new Squad Cost Ratio rules set to come in during July.
The new regulations - which allow the Whites to spend up to 85% of their revenue year-on-year - will leave Leeds with slightly less spending room in the short-term. In time, the club will benefit more from it, especially once the West Stand expansion is complete. Sales will be sanctioned also because room needs to be made for new arrivals. Farke has long championed having a tighter squad in order to keep morale at a good level.
While numbers might increase by one or two, it is likely that this mantra will continue.because of SCR coupled with the need to bolster the talent pool. He says the next two seasons will be about stability in the Premier League.
