A Leeds woman has spoken out about the daily pain she lives with from fibromyalgia that can sometimes leave her 'grieving for the life she had'.
Astrid, who lives in Bramley, told LeedsLive: "I'm never not in pain. But you can have a period of time where you have a flare up in symptoms and that can be short or go on for ages. Astrid first started noticing things weren't quite right after she broke her foot, and had walked around on it for some time without realising it was broken. Even once her cast came off, she realised the pain was continuing, and it got worse from there.
Astrid, like many others in her support group, is no longer able to do her work as a social worker because of her symptoms. Fibromyalgia Action UK says many find it difficult continuing to work due to the chronic pain, and have to be particularly careful to avoid stress that may cause flare ups. "Being in pain all the time and feeling like you're grieving the life you had can have a massive impact on your mental health too."
Leeds City Council set up a Zoom meeting for Astrid and some others during lockdown, which Astrid has decided to expand, hoping to draw on the therapeutic skills she developed working as a social worker. Since summer 2021, she has been facilitating 'Fibro Friends Leeds', a support group for anyone with fibromyalgia or chronic pain.
