A local veteran was honored for his service this weekend. Not only was he surprised -- but he now has a patriotic symbol flying high in his front yard. It’s all thanks to a mission started by the American Legion Post 88 -- providing free flag poles for veterans. We were there when they rolled up, installed, and raised the Red, White, and Blue.
) - It was an early start for American Legion Post 88. Saturday was a perfect day for a motorcycle ride. But this particular ride had a mission attached.
“As an American Legion -- we are going to present you with a flag pole in honor of your service in the military. And we’re all here for you,” they told him.Serving in the Air Force for 22 1/2 years -- Mr. Bexley is still very proud of his service and love for Old Glory. Post 88 started installing the flags for veterans more than a year and a half ago. So far they’ve installed between 15-to-20 of the 20 foot flag poles.
The pole is complete with light on top -- so the flag can be flown at night. It’s all paid for through fundraising by Post 88.“I tell you what -- -- I’ve never felt so honored until today,” said Mr. Bexley.“It’s very emotional -- this is probably the first time I’ve seen dad get choked up -- probably in my life. It’s huge to us. It’s good to see dad serving his country and then also all of the organizations he has served in his community.
