Stephen Vogt said managing a bullpen requires a bit of 'driver assistance' from time to time.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Stephen Vogt spent one year as Seattle’s bullpen coach before taking over as Guardians manager. In that year under Mariners skipper Scott Servais, Vogt said he learned a lot. Not just about how to run a team and a pitching staff, but also the skills required to keep players on course across a 162-game schedule.
“These guys are the best of the best,” Vogt said. “It’s like, you see them veering out of the lane, you bump ‘em back in and you keep ‘em going down the highway. That’s our job as coaches.” “When you are out in the bullpen, you get the truth from everybody and you understand who they are, what makes them tick,” Vogt said. “And man, they’ve been outstanding. It’s easy to point the finger when they have a tough one because they stand out, the tough ones stand out. No one talks about it when they do their job and go three up, three down. We only talk about the relievers when there’s a blip. So these guys have been consistent all year and I feel good handing the ball to any of them.
