Lewis Capaldi Dedicates Brits2020 Award To His Late Grandmother
Lewis Capaldi marked his BRIT Award win for Best Song Of The Year with a reference to Love Island and his grandmother. 'Contrary to popular belief,' he said, 'a lot of people think this song is about my ex girlfriend, who you can now see every night on Love Island. It's actually about my grandmother, who sadly passed away a few years ago.'
The speech follows a widely held assumption by fans that winning song Someone You Loved - partly responsible for making him a star - was about Love Island contestant Paige Turley, who is currently in the villa in South Africa. It is not the first time Lewis has discussed the show, and its wider connection with one of his biggest hits. ‘Me and Paige are on good terms and she’s not my girlfriend any more, so when I found out she was on Love Island I was, like, “Who cares?”’ he said only last week. ‘By all accounts she might win it and best of luck to her, but Someone You Loved is not about Paige. It’s about my grandmother. When you’re little, your grandmother is a nice old lady who makes you a nice bowl of soup.
Lewis's win was toward the end of the ceremony, following a performance from rapper Dave, singer Billie Eilish and a medley from Stormzy. Lewis, who received the prize from Sir Tom Jones, had been nominated for four awards at the event, thrown at the O2.
