Gallup attributes the shift in part to greater societal support of LGBT Americans.
Most LGBT Americans announced their sexuality to others by the age of 30, according to the poll. Nearly 60% of these individuals said they had done so by the age of 22. The remaining 10% came out between their 30s and 50s.
Among those aged 18 to 29, the median age of coming out was 17. For those aged between 30 and 49, it was 20. The median among all LGBT adults was 19. "Today’s young LGBTQ+ Americans report having come out nearly a decade earlier than LGBTQ+ seniors, reflecting societal shifts in greater acceptance that LGBTQ+ adults report having seen over the past decade," Gallup's report reads.
Both men and women were most likely to come out between 19 and 22, according to the poll. LGBT women were more than twice as likely than men to report having come out by the age of 14. Most survey respondents reported feeling that society’s treatment of LGBT individuals has improved. Among LGBT adults, 27% said acceptance and treatment of LGBT individuals has “gotten a lot better.” Those who said treatment had “gotten a little better” made up the majority with 43%.of a controversial California law which makes it illegal for school districts to create policies requiring teachers to notify parents of changes to their children's gender identity.
