White Sox closer Liam Hendriks will return to MLB on Memorial Day against the Angels, the team announced. Hendriks announced that he was cancer free on April 20 after treatment in January for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He has not played since October of 2022.
They would be improved by the addition of the best reliever in baseball, but have been holding down the fort recently.
From Hendriks’ side, the grueling labor of his amazing comeback story was visible as he tried to ramp up against Triple-A hitters in midseason form. The home ballpark for the Charlotte Knights, the Sox’s Triple-A affiliate, is a home run haven. Hendriks ran a 10.80 ERA with three home runs allowed in six appearances with the Knights, as his top fastball plateaued around 94-95 mph.
At his request, Hendriks’ work to return was relocated to throwing simulated games against his White Sox teammates. While that has removed the element of the public being able to see his measurable results, manager Pedro Grifol has used the term “ticked up” to sum up the progress of Hendriks’ stuff over his last two sessions.
Chicago’s manager has even stood in the batter’s box at points, just to get a feel of how his closer’s pitches were moving. And make no mistake, Grifol has stated repeatedly that Hendriks’ return will be to the most important role in the bullpen, which only added to the need to get him up to full working order before activating him.
