WA Liberal leader Libby Mettam survives a move to unseat her, following a campaign to pressure her out and make way for Perth Lord Mayor and media personality Basil Zempilas.
WA Liberal leader Libby Mettam has survived a bid to oust her from the top job less than four months out from WA's election.
"I gave my colleagues the opportunity to move a motion of no confidence. No one did," Ms Mettam said in a statement. Speaking after the vote, former premier Colin Barnett — who was not in the meeting — said he was pleased Ms Mettam continued to be the leader.Earlier on Tuesday, Ms Mettam said she was shown the polling two weeks ago."The polling was not conducted by the Liberal Party," she said in a statement released early Tuesday morning.
"I was told I should step aside quickly if I wanted to avoid the polling being provided to the media to further damage me and the Liberal Party.""I believe that this is the only way we can move forward.Mr Zempilas, an employee of Seven West Media, is the Liberal candidate for Churchlands but is not a member of parliament.
Ms Mettam said if Mr Zempilas was to assume the leadership, she would not be interested in being deputy leader. "Libby is the leader of the state parliamentary party. I see no scenario where that will change," Mr Goiran said.WA Premier Roger Cook said he does not care who leads the Liberal Party, describing them as "shambolic".
