Victorian Liberals have been told to cancel Friday’s vote to expel controversial MP Moira Deeming or “risk a very messy legal dispute”.
On Tuesday, Liberal MP Richard Riordan wrote to Opposition Leader John Pesutto, others in the leadership team and the five MPs who put their names to the expulsion motion to advise them that the upcoming vote would be invalid.
“The notice of special meeting has no signatures. I have sought some independent legal advice ... a motion of this gravity must still be signed by its proposers. Pesutto’s office has been contacted for comment. The party’s parliamentary constitution was updated six months ago.
