“The real risk in Australia ... is that a major political party decides that it wants to occupy an extreme position over there on the right. That’s what’s happened to the Republican Party in the United States. He said compulsory and preferential voting in Australia meant the Liberals must “hold their nerve” and trust that votes from the far-right would flow to them without repositioning their policy platform to chase this minority.“If you’ve got two major political parties, it makes sense for them to sit in the centre with virtually indistinguishable policies. And for many policies in Australia for many years now, that’s what you’ve seen,” Dr Henry said.
Victorian Opposition Leader John Pesutto claimed the party had reached a “turning point” on Friday after it agreed to expel Mrs Deeming by 19 votes to 11. Liberal MPs hope her expulsion will allow the party to move on from a damaging saga sparked by her attendance at an anti-transgender rally in Melbourne where neo-Nazis performed the “sieg heil” salute.on Thursday and she now says she will “never resign” as a Liberal Party member.“I will never quit.
