The Liberals have warned Labor it risks impacting regional areas most if it gets into bed with the Greens to deliver a centerpiece election promise.

Greens leader Adam Bandt has reportedly issued Labor an ultimatum to ban all new coal and gas projects in exchange for the party's support of the Safeguard Mechanism Bill.will see Australia’s 215 largest Co2 emitters be forced to cut emissions by almost five per cent every year by 2030.

The party’s hard stance is reminiscent of 2009 when the Greens - lead by Bob Brown - voted against the Rudd government’s Carbon Reduction Scheme, twice. If passed the reforms yield a 205 million tonne cut in Co2 by 2030 - or the equivalent of two-thirds of Australia's cars - and help achieve Labor’s legislated target of a 43 per cent reduction in emissions.“The Greens will ultimately have to decide... For the 200 million tonnes of emissions reduction or against it,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

“We had a voluntary safeguard mechanism to encourage heavy emitters to reduce those emissions. We also had a pathway through technology, not taxes,” she said.
