Senator Lidia Thorpe’s departure from the Greens to join the crossbench as an independent is a “big slap in the face” for her former party, Sky News Digital Editor Jack Houghton says.

Mr Houghton said it is also a “headache” for the Albanese government, which will need the Greens and two crossbenchers to pass contentious bills through the Senate.

“She was hand-delivered her seat in 2020 by the party when she filled the vacancy left by former leader Richard Di Natale,” he said.“Which means – you guessed it – that the Greens have no hope of reacquiring that seat for at least another five years.”
