Lidia Thorpe has hit out at the Greens for “demonising” her over a controversial relationship with a former bikie boss, who the Senator now claims she never dated.
Ms Thorpe referred herself to the Senate’s privileges committee last year over allegations she failed to disclose a relationship with former motorcycle gang leader Dean Martin while sitting on the joint parliamentary law enforcement committee. Picture: NCA NewsWire / Gary Ramage
"I had no relationship with that person. I was given legal advice by the Greens lawyer that I had to say that I'd dated this person." "I think I deserve an apology from the leader of the Greens for one, because I lost my position as well,” Ms Thorpe said on Tuesday. The parliamentary law enforcement committee regularly receives confidential briefings about bikie gangs and organised crime.
"Senators should exercise caution in relation to the possibility of direct conflicts of interest and also the perception that their personal relationships may conflict with their official duties," it says.
