A supermarket that was previously ranked as the most expensive has now been listed as the joint-second cheapest for eight staple items. Lidl has consistently come out on top of the list since January last year.
A supermarket named the most expensive a year ago has now been ranked as the joint-second cheapest for eight staple items.
In the first week of April last year, Asda was voted the most expensive out of six leading supermarkets when it came to the same eight staple items - bread, milk, butter, coffee, tea bags, beans, chicken and mince. But this week, Asda has worked out joint-second cheapest in our comparison.That's despite the fact that Asda’s prices for the eight items have remained exactly the same as they were last week.
Lidl remains cheapest in our weekly price check with a bill of £12.02, followed by Sainsbury’s and Asda both at £12.33. Aldi is now fourth cheapest at £12.34, followed by Morrisons at £12.37 and Tesco at £12.47. Asda also disagrees with our comparison and says that our small sample of products does not represent the fuller picture of prices and do not account for its deals. The supermarket says that, across the board, its Just Essentials range is the largest and cheapest available, alongside Aldi's.
