A tribunal ruled Maddie Hunter was subjected to sexual harassment even though her boss 'was not sexually motivated'.
An employment judge pointed out sexual harassment ‘does not have to be sexually motivated’ A former Lidl worker who was subjected to ‘regular’ lewd comments from her gay boss suffered sexual harassment, a tribunal has ruled. Maddie Hunter encountered a ‘culture of harassment’ at the supermarket’s branch in Wallington, Oxfordshire, soon after she started working there in 2019 at the age of 18, according to the tribunal’s findings.
Challenged over an allegation that he told Ms Hunter she was ‘distracting’ in her uniform, he denied this on the grounds that, as a gay man, he is not interested in women. Employment Judge Sarah Matthews rejected the denial, saying she did ‘not accept that is a reason why he did not make the comment’ and that it amounted to harassment. Mr Harding admitted to hugging Ms Hunter on one occasion when he met her outside work, and to telling her he found her boyfriend attractive.
