'I worry about EU citizens who are not as lucky as me, who might not be aware that they have to apply for a new immigration status called ‘settled status’ if they want to stay here.'
I believe there are many reasons why people voted for Brexit and their grievances and frustrations should not be ignored. They need to be addressed. I just don’t think that Brexit is the answer.
I’ve lived in five different countries over the last 10 years. I’m used to applying for visas, crossing hostile borders and being refused work permits. Once, I packed up my whole flat into boxes and left the country with one suitcase when my work permit ran out and it wasn’t clear if I would be allowed back into the country. On my first layover to Germany, I turned on my phone and learnt that my permit was granted minutes after my flight took off.
After living abroad for the last years, I can’t help seeing Brexit through an international lens. It’s still difficult to explain to my Turkish friends why the UK decided to leave the EU when so many of them were hoping for their own country to join. I’m happy to be back in London despite the Brexit chaos. I’m grateful to live in a place that offers the safety and comfort so many of my friends and people I’ve worked with can only dream of.
I still feel excited to roam the streets of London and go for a walk in the park on weekends. But something has changed. There’s an underlying feeling of worry and uncertainty.
