Lancashire's latest trendy hotspot
The gorgeous little town of Penwortham boasts fashionable bars, sophisticated venues and independent shops. When we last visited, post-pandemic earlier this year, locals said it had gone from being ‘dead’ on a Saturday to ‘lively and vibrant’ in the space of five years.
But if there’s one thing we’ve seen across Lancashire in the last year, it’s that the cost of living crisis has really taken its toll. Many high street traders are struggling with skyrocketing prices, energy bills and other costs. Julie tells us: “There's a wide variety of customers -we get schoolchildren popping in for bits and bobs, older people pop in, so we don’t stop.”
“All it needs is cosmetic improvements, but in terms of the way people are going about their days here, it’s fine. It just needs a bit of a spruce up but not too much. Kat tells me: “It’s all going really well and it’s incredibly busy - we’re opening in the evenings as well, so we’re finding more younger people coming in on an evening, and we have cocktails and a constantly changing menu.”
“And the new cycle lane linking Penwortham to Preston will make it more accessible for people who would rather come here. Back in the day, we would have huge lorries and HGVs going past. Now the bypass has lightened the load.” Yet the Penwortham of the past was a very different version of the bubbly, pleasant town today. Dating back to prehistoric times, it had a motte and bailey castle in the Norman era, some evidence of which remains in a local churchyard, as well as a manor house, which leaves no trace. Also lost to time and tide was the Benedictine Penwortham Priory, while Grade II listed Penwortham Hall, built in 1801 by industrialist John Horrocks, still stands.
Fortuntately, happier vibes and a joie de vivre spirit emanate from modern day Penwortham. Like many towns across Lancashire, it saw a resurgence during and post pandemic as crowds flocked back to their local high streets. “I love living in Penwortham as it’s not far from the town yet you’ve got the gorgeous parks on the doorstep and you’ve got everything on Liverpool Road, which I’m looking forward to them doing up.”
