The row of cottages near the coast are older than the town itself
A row of shrimper's cottages just a short walk away from Southport 's coast are older than the town itself. The cottages on Shellfield Road were built on the beach back in the early 1700s before the road was built. Shrimpers lived in the cottages and would bring their boats up to the houses that lined the shore. Mary Porter, 77, has lived in one of the shrimper's cottages for the last 20 years. When the house was built back in 1724, it was originally built on the sand dunes.
'There's houses behind houses. When they had kids and the kids grew up they just built another house behind it. There was no regulation in those days. 'The postmen come around here and they have a nightmare. A lot of them know where they're going, but if you get a new one that's not been around here you can see them standing looking around to see where they are.
