Life in the area looked a lot different during the war
For decades, New Brighton has been a haven for tourists - in the summer months especially seeing visitors clamour onto packed Mersey Ferries to spend a day on New Brighton 's sandy beaches. Certain generations will also remember dancing the night away in the Tower Ballroom or enjoying the rides at the funfair. But for those who grew up in the 1940s in the Wallasey area and beyond, their childhood was completely different to the memories made there in the decades that followed.
'Before that, we didn't do very much. The cinema, of course, was always popular and when they were open, they were crowded. 'New Brighton Baths, they had Miss New Brighton competitions every year. We went there a lot on the summer.' Fellow Lighthouse Lodge resident Pamela Thorne, who grew up in Liscard, also shared memories of what wartime Merseyside was like. Pamela, 89, told the ECHO: 'I was born in 1935. 'Well, it was quite different then, we had the war.
